Meet our tow truck. It’s big. It’s green. It will tow just about anything.
Before this retired firetruck found its way into the hands of crew at Sparks Motors, this 1992 Spartan Fire Apparatus was a blaze quenching machine! Staying true to its hero ways, it’s now on recovery and rescue duty here at the shop.
This truck came ready for duty – loaded with a Detroit 60 Diesel Motor and Allison World 3000 Class Automatic Transmission. The interior seats six and offers AC/heat throughout the entire cab.
We ditched the water pump and utility bed for a Miller Industries Century Tow Bed. At 22 feet long and 102″ wide it will haul any truck we’ve built and then some.
Sometimes recovery will put you in some wild places. So to keep everyone safe and seen, we threw a Whelen Towman’s Freedom IV series Light Bar up top. Up front, is a custom built bumper by the best in the biz, Overkill Racing and Chassis.
This truck is now a part of our diesel family and we’re sure it will be here for a long time to come.
I love cars and there history. I always wanted a career in automotive’s. I don’t know everything but I want to learn and grow. It takes special people to be able to learn as you go. I love the hands on learning you give and offer to us as students. I don’t have a resume but hope I can help you understand me with out it.

This dude’s a beast. We would gladly trade one our trucks in for this bad boy lol. What’s the max tow weight on it?
What a great idea for a tow truck. The extended cab is a nice feature that’s not found on most tow trucks. The original 1992 Spartan was a Detroit 60 series, 450 HP engine, 12.7 liter,
(Some trucks were fitted with 350 hp engines) and featured a 500 gallon water tank.
Nice job on customizing the truck. It looks like it should be able to handle just about anything. It looks like a retired fire truck doesn’t have to stay retired.
Your truck is almost the same color as the trucks on the website I just published. It’s actually a good color for a tow truck. That’s what first caught my eye. Thank you for sharing.
Now that is an impressive machine! Beautifully done. I love that you’ve built this from an old fire truck. Keep up the great work!
Love the truck. I’m actually a firefighter in Baton Rouge and we had some reserve Spartans similar to this. Really not a bad riding truck but I’ll be sure to send this to my buddy that owns a towing company in New Orleans. Great job on this guys!
I think this is a great concept, I only wish that this truck had a hook and chain attachment to tow very large vehicles like semi trucks (maybe it does and I’m not aware of it). I must ask, are there certain types of vehicles that the Green Machine can tow that a flatbed cannot tow? The sheer size of this tow truck probably requires more fuel than the average tow truck. Even if this towing machine isn’t practical, it is very cool!
That thing looks so menacing. Almost as if it’s taking my car to the afterlife. The color serves your purpose of being seen very well. It just pops!
I look the tire tow truck
I love the tow truck I love tow trucks anyway but this one is way past great.
I WANT THIS TRUCK!!! It is awesome!!
I’m a fire fighter at a volunteer fire department in Maine and my friends would love this thing for all it’s worth.
